About the project

In Uttar Pradesh, 6.88 percent of the natural land area is forest covered, in which one national park and 26 wildlife sanctuaries are declared protected areas. Natural attractions and bio-diversity are the invaluable heritage of this state. The rivers, streams, lakes, ponds, various types of gardens, trees and forests of the state contain infinite biological wealth within themselves.

Endangered Species project, Luptpraya pariyojna, Uttar Pradesh includes four bird sanctuaries namely Shaheed Chandrashekhar Azad Bird Sanctuary, Nawabganj, Unnao (RAMSAR SITE ID - 2412), Samaspur Bird Sanctuary, Rae Bareli (RAMSAR SITE ID - 2415), Sandi Bird Sanctuary, Hardoi (RAMSAR SITE ID - 2409), Lakh Bahosi Bird Sanctuary, Kannauj and Gharial Breeding and Rehabilitation Centre, Kukrail. All these sites are playing important roles in bio-diversity conservation and eco-tourism. In all the bird sanctuaries, from November to March, lakhs of migratory birds, traveling thousands of miles from remote places of the world, stay here after finding adequate food and favorable habitat and remain the center of attraction for tourists, bird lovers and bird experts. Similarly, Gharial Breeding and Rehabilitation Center Kukrail, which is situated in the middle of Lucknow city, is established on the world map for breeding and rehabilitation of endangered gharial and turtle species. It has been rated as one of the most successful projects of forest department in the country.

As a part of the Uttar Pradesh Forest Department, our mission is to safeguard and preserve the diverse and precious flora and fauna within our jurisdiction. Our lush and sprawling forests are home to a myriad of captivating creatures, with a particular focus on protecting the avian wonders that grace our skies, the majestic Gharials that patrol our waterways, and the gentle turtles that call our rivers home.

Our team is passionately committed to conserving the vibrant bird species that fill the air with their enchanting melodies and striking plumage. From the elegant Sarus Cranes to the Eurasian Wryneck , we work tirelessly to ensure their habitats remain intact, free from harm, and brimming with biodiversity.

Moreover, our efforts extend to safeguarding the critically endangered Gharials, guardians of our riverine ecosystems. These prehistoric reptiles find refuge in the tranquil waters of the Ganges and its tributaries, where we strive to protect their nesting sites, manage their habitat, and promote their survival.

In addition, we recognize the vital role that turtles play in maintaining the ecological balance of our region. With dedicated conservation programs, we are committed to preserving the nesting sites, ensuring the safety of hatchlings, and creating a secure environment for these gentle aquatic reptiles.

Our work is driven by a deep respect for the natural world and a commitment to uphold the ecological integrity of Uttar Pradesh's diverse landscapes. Through unwavering dedication and comprehensive conservation strategies, we aim to ensure that the birds, Gharials, and turtles continue to thrive in harmony with our state's pristine natural surroundings.
