Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary is situated near Nawabganj town on Lucknow-Kanpur National Highway No. 25 under Nawabganj tehsil of Unnao district. The bird sanctuary was established in the year 1994 under the Wild Animals (Protection) Act-1972. Its area is 224 60). The main objective of the establishment is to protect and promote local and migratory birds and other biodiversity as well as to conserve their natural habitat. This bird sanctuary is under the IBA of Bombay Natural History Society. There is also a site. The groves and forest areas situated on the banks of the lake provide a charming, peaceful and picturesque environment.

Bird Lake of Bihar also has religious importance. Legend has it that on the orders of Lord Shri Ram, Shri Lakshman ji left Mother Sita in the forest near Bithoor. Today the same place is known as Parihar. While returning from Parihar to Ayodhya, Shri Lakshman ji rested on the banks of this lake.

During winter, flocks of various species of migratory and local birds are the main attraction of the lake. There are about 10,000 bird species in the world, out of which about 1300 species are found in India. Of these, more than 200 species cross the immense heights of the Himalayan Mountains and come for winter migration from Siberia, Mongolia, Western Europe, China, Central Asia, etc., covering a distance of up to 10 thousand kilometers, avoiding adverse conditions. In relatively warm climates, migratory birds get abundant food and protection.

​

Starting from the end of February till the second week of March, migratory birds return to their native places but some local birds can be seen even after that.

​

Eco-tourism: Eco-tourism has its own importance in awakening public awareness towards nature, birds and other wildlife. With the aim of encouraging eco-tourism, many structures have been developed in the bird sanctuary, which include 02.3 km eco-friendly cycle track, 01.69 km long walking path: Bird Interpretation Centre: Watch Tower: Children Park: Deer Park and excellent forest rest house, cafeteria. And motels are especially noteworthy.

Biodiversity

​

Some of the biodiversity found in the bird sanctuary are as follows-

​

Migratory Birds : - Spot-billed Duck, Mallard, Wigeon, Tufted Pochard, Gargany Teal, Red Crested Pochard, Common Pochard, Shoveler, Gadwall, Black-headed Gull, Cotton Teal, Common Teal, Coot, Pintail, Marsh Sunpiper, White Wagtail, White-eyed. Immigratory Birds : -  Little Breaded, Spoon Billed Duck Dooley and Stork It Open Billed Stork, Fanted Stork, Ga Cane, Black Necked Stork, Shikra, White Breasted Water Hen, Purple Swamp Hen, Bronze Winged Jacana, Pheasant Tailed Jacana, Blue Pigeon, Rufous Turtle Dove, different types of Kingfishers, Purple Heron, Pond Heron, Black Dragoon, Black Winged Stilt, Jungle Babbler, Bee-eater, Hudhud, Cuckoo, Peacock, Rose Ringed Parakeet etc.

Local Birds: -  Purple Swamp Hen, Sarus Crane, Open Bill Stork, Comb Duck, Spoon Bill Duck, Spot Bill Duck, Little Greaves, Bronzed Winged Jacana, Purple Heron, Darter, Pied King Fisher, Indian Roller, Black Headed Ibis, Pheasant Tailed Jacana.

 

The arrival of migratory birds like Egrets, Black Drongo, Shikra, Lesser Whistling Duck etc. starts from November. December-January is the best time for bird watching when thousands of migratory and non-resident birds can be seen.

Fish: Rohu, Bam, Suya, Dedla, Mangur, Nain, Sidhri, Katla, Saur, Girai, Sindhi, Padhan etc.

​

Amphibians and Reptiles: Many frogs, various turtles, pythons, two-headed snakes, Paniha, Dhamin, Nag, Karat etc.

​

Lizards and Chameleons: Geckos, chameleons, iguanas and lizards.

​

Wild animals: Jungle cat, civet, fishing cat, mongoose, jackal, mole rat, squirrel, rat, rohi, wild rabbit, nilgai etc.

​

Flora: Acacia, Dhak, Arjun, Prosopis, Peepal, Date, Mahua, Karonda, Kanji, Neem and some aquatic plants like Khaja Uticularia, Nari, Narai, Hydila, Nagarmotha Kamal Kumudini, Nilofar Jalrani, Pate Jaljal etc.
