Gharial Rehabilitation Center Kukrail

This center is situated in the Kukrail reserve forest, just close to Kukrail Picnic Spot.

According to a survey done in year 1975, the number of Gharials in the wild had come down drastically to roughly around three hundred so to recover this endangered species Gharial Rehabilitation Center Kukrail was formed.

In the early years of this center, the eggs of gharials were collected from Chambal river and the hatchings and rearing of young gharials was under taken at the center and after keeping these gharials for at least 2 years then released in wild.

At the center we have mother stock Gharials that were born in year 1976 (1 Male and 4 females) so eggs are collected from the center itself.

After collecting eggs of Gharials, these are kept in incubation room for 60 to 70 days to get hatched and after successful hatch these gharials are kept in Hatchling ponds followed by keeping them in yearling ponds after a year.

For turtles, every species of turtle has different incubation period so after completing this incubation period in incubation room, hatchling turtles are kept in hatchling ponds that are specifically designed for turtles and after keeping them for a year at the center, these turtles get ready to be released in their respective habitat.

This center is playing an important role in conserving more than 10 species of turtles and Gharials.

Gharial Rehabilitation Centre, Kukrail, Lucknow covers an area of about 10 hectares and it has been recognized as Biodiversity site by Uttar Pradesh government.

From our Gharial center, 264 gharials have been given to various organization including countries like Pakistan, Tokyo, New York etc.

Since the inception of this Gharial Center we have released 7160 gharials into various rivers and 21320 turtles in their respective habitat.

Some of the Major species of turtles which are breeding at the center are Nilssonia gangeticus, Melanochelys tricarinata, Hardella thurjii, Pangsura tecta, Pangsura tentoria circumdata, Geoclemys hamiltonii..
