Turtles

The Centre has a proud collection of eleven turtle species found in U.P. out of these eleven species, six species (Nilssonia gangeticus, Lissemys punctata andersonii, Geoclemys hamiltonii, Batagur kachuga, Pangsura  tecta, Pangsura tentoria circumdata and Pangsura tecta) are breeding successfully in captivity. Melanochelys tricarinata

· Common Name- Tricarinate hill turtle

· WLPA- Schedule-I (Part-II)

· IUCN- Endangered

· Diet- Omnivorous

· Clutch size- 1 to 3 eggs

· Incubation period- 90 to 130 days

· Egg laying period- February to April and October to December

Size- Up to 16 cms

Geochelone elegans

· Common Name- Indian star tortoise

· WLPA- Schedule-IV

· IUCN- Vulnerable

· Diet- Herbivorous

· Clutch size- 2 to 10 eggs

· Incubation period- 100 to 130 days

· Egg laying period- November to December

Size- Males- Up to 26 cms, Females- Up to 38 cms

Nilssonia hurum

· Common Name- Indian peacock soft shell turtle

· WLPA- Schedule-1 (Part-II)

· IUCN- Endangered

· Diet- Omnivorous

· Clutch size- 20 to 38 eggs

· Incubation period- 200 to 220 days

· Egg laying period- August to December

Size- Up to 60 cms

Chitra indica

· Common Name- Narrow headed soft shell turtle

· WLPA- Schedule-II

· IUCN- Endangered

· Diet- Omnivorous

· Clutch size- 65 to 187 eggs

· Incubation period- 40 to 70 days

· Egg laying period- August to September

Size- Up to 150 cms
